- WhaWhaWhat????
-
Yeah, we know. See everyone rants and raves about something, Dennis Miller made a career out of it, Spike Lee does it in every movie. People do it all over the Internet in newsgroups, emailing lists, and discussion boards. Some are really funny, some make a good point, some are crap. While not simply create a web site we everyone can post their rants and raves, that way they will be in a centralized location and people can add their own comments and vote on which they liked the most. So we did this and here you are.
- Ok I'm angry how do I get started?
-
Ok, first turn off the Goth music. Next sign up for an account using your email address. A verification code will be sent to the email address you supply. If you do not validate your email then the account will be deleted after 15 days.
- I never received my verification code what do I do?
-
Every now and then people don't receive their code. You will know when you log in. It will say "Your email has not been verified". If you have verified then you will only see the "logged in as blahblah" then you don't have to worry. If this is the case you can wait a day or a few hours and try to send it again. Or if you still have no luck you can email me at info at thethoughtless.net and I can send it to you or just override the system.
- Will you sell my email to spammers?.
-
Yes, this is all a big ploy to get emails and sell them for 1/10000th of a penny, We spent hours writing rants, web pages, and managing databases just to get your email so my neighbor can send you naked photos when her husband is away.
- I have an account and I'm ready to rant.
-
Log in to your account, note that you use your email to log in not your username. Click on the Submit link in the right side menu or here.. This is your main workspace menu where you have all your rants and raves.
- How do I submit my rant?
-
When you create a rant it is saved in your workspace. Then you can go and continue working on it at your leisure and your progress will be saved. Finally when it is all ready you can click the check box saying that the rant is finished and ready to be posted.
- I submitted my rant, why hasn't it shown up on the main page?
-
Every rant that is submitted must get approval from our staff. This is to make sure that the formatting is correct and that the rant does not contain anything that is really offensive, such as dirty words, (I know you know which ones I'm talking about) and other stuff such as "Nazi's are great". Basically, a good rule of thumb is that if you think the rant will offend someone and not get posted then that's probably what will happen. Look at Dennis Miller, he managed to do stand up for years with out using super foul language and not being outright disrespectful to others.
- I think this guy is a Nazi and I want to say it! Free Speech!!
-
Fine, go ahead and say it but remember that this is not your web site and we may choose not to post it. Also if you cross the line you may get your account disabled and placed in timeout. If you can't play nice with others then you won't play at all.
- I submitted my rant and now I want to edit it.
-
Sorry, but you can't. Once it goes through the process it cannot be changed. The people who approve or not approve a rant have made the decision based on what was in the rant. So if you could change it then people could submit rants about happy people and rainbows and then after they were approved go and talk about Satan and blowing up the world.
- What are the different user states?
-
The user states are based on your level of participation on the site. We will not go into details on how that works because I don't want people messing with the system. But the different states are as follows:
Newbie
Freshmeat
Whiner
Ranter
Regular
Loyalist
Mover and Shaker
Big Pimping
Zen Master
Uberranter
- Why do some comments show up but some only show the title?
-
There is a threshold for comments. Ones that are moderated up to be equal or greater than your threshold are complete shown. The rest appear with only the title. You change change your threshold by changing it in your profile (the My Profile link in the 2nd left menu). The idea behind the threshold limit is that you are basically saying "I only want to view comments that are this good".
- Why do I have to wait 24 hours to post a comment after I sign up? Why do I have to verify my email to post a comment?
- These two questions are grouped because it is for the same reason: to cut back or eliminate message board SPAM. See, it's becoming common for people to post ads and other junk in message boards. By making a user register and wait 24 hours then chances are the spammers are not going to bother and just move on to another site. As for verifying your email first it is because spammers will use fake email addresses and if they do this when the create an account then they will never receive the verification code in their email. Its all to make this place a little more streamlined and reduce the amount of crap coming in. Granted if they really wanted to they could follow the rules, wait 24 hours and then post spam, but its a little less likely then if we left the comments wide open. Look on the bright side: You only have to create, verify, and wait 24 hours only once. Its a little inconvenient but I think it will work out for the best in the long run.
- Why am I banned?
- This one shouldn't even be here. If you get banned then chances are you deserved it. Most likely you said something offensive or just have been abusing the comments in general. Shape up or ship out.
- I put $1 in the swear jar why am I still banned.
- The process isn't instantaneous. When you donate a dollar I get a confirmation email. I then have to go into the accounts and unlock yours. I'm not sitting there holding my breathe waiting for the email to come in. I check it fairly often but hey I have a life and a job which takes priority over your potty mouth. Those are the breaks. It's only a dollar and its better than waiting 2 weeks.
- Where do all the $1's go?
- That's a good question. Most will go to helping promote this site, such as advertising on other sites. The rest will go to some kind of treat for our Most Valuable Visitors, as a little way of saying thank you.
